Fishing with Flywise Anglers

Flywise Anglers runs two lodges in Chile's Aysén Region, one above the Simpson Valley near Coyhaique and one on Lago Misterioso, and takes six anglers a week. Wade and jet-boat fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout covers the Simpson, Paloma and Ñirehuao rivers and lakes, three days from each base.

Simpson, Aysén and Mañihuales Rivers From the Main Lodge

Flywise Anglers bases its first three days at a main lodge on the mountainside above the Upper Simpson Valley, so the home water is minutes away. The Simpson, Aysén, Mañihuales and Huemules rivers are walked and waded or floated, and the Simpson system holds both brown and rainbow trout, with smaller rivers, spring creeks and lagoons running off it. The lodge looks out over some of the rivers and lakes on the week’s program, so anglers can read the wind and weather before they leave.

The Paloma System and Cerro Castillo Lakes

Across the valley, the Paloma system runs through temperate rainforest and takes in Lago Elizalde and Lagos Paloma, Azul, Desierto and Caro. Flywise has access to the heart of the Paloma and fishes its rivers and lakes from jet boats. Cerro Castillo is the dry-fly lake day, casting for large brown trout beneath the mountain skyline.

Ñirehuao Spring Creeks and Lago Misterioso

Midweek the program moves to the second lodge, on the shore of Lago Misterioso. The Ñirehuao is a grasshopper river, so big terrestrial dries do much of the work, and access to more than 50 kilometers of the river and its tributaries across two ranches means easy walk-and-wade water with healthy numbers of brown trout. Nearby headwater lakes and lagoons hold large browns that can be sight-fished on shallow flats.

Catajets, Three Days and Three Days, and Dry Flies

The standard week splits three fishing days from each lodge. The boats are jet-driven catboats built by Adam Henderson, with swivel seats and hip braces so anglers can stand and fish in rough water, and the jet drive lets a boat float a river and run back up it. Guides adjust each day to weather and the angler’s preference, whether that is floating, wading small water or fishing lakes. Dry flies are preferred but any technique is on offer, and lunch is eaten at the water’s edge. Two-week stays fish a week from each lodge, with a third base at Cerro Castillo as an option.

Bring your own rods, reels, lines, waders and boots, as only limited loaner gear is available. A 7-weight is the main rod, a stiff 6-weight with a 7-weight line also works, and an 8-weight suits sink tips and big flies. Weight-forward floating lines are standard, with a sink tip of 250 to 450 grains for deeper water.

Leaders are 9-foot, 0x to 2x, with tippet from 0x to 5x. The license, tippet and flies are included, guides carry a full fly selection and the lodge has a fly tying table. Dries and big terrestrials do most of the work, such as Chernobyl Ants, Fat Albert, beetles and caddis, with Woolly Buggers and Clousers for streamers.

Pack good rain gear and layers, polarized sunglasses with a spare pair, and sunscreen. Bug spray is rarely needed.

Flywise Anglers Accommodation

The main lodge is built from native lenga and stone from the property, on a mountainside above the Simpson Valley, with three double rooms for six guests. Meals are served in a quincho with a view over the valley, and a wood-fired hot tub is made ready on request.

Lenga Timber and Stone Above the Simpson Valley

The lodge is family run by Adam Henderson and Ema Morales and takes six guests a week in three double rooms, each with its own bathroom. It is built from native lenga and flat rock gathered on the property. Guests share rooms in pairs, and single occupancy can be arranged on request.

A Chef, a Quincho and the Last-Night Asado

A professional chef cooks every meal at the lodge, Chilean and international, and with so few guests the menu is adjusted to requests. Dinner is served in the quincho, which faces the valley, and liquor is included. Arrival evening starts with cocktails and appetizers, and the last night is a traditional Chilean asado.

Two Nights at Lago Misterioso

Midweek, guests pack for two nights in a small dry bag and fish their way to the second lodge, remote on the shore of Lago Misterioso. Lodge staff drive ahead during the day and have it ready when the fishing ends.

Beyond Fishing Experiences

Flywise Anglers welcomes non-anglers, and anglers taking a day off, with alternatives arranged by Ema Morales. She has worked as an ecotourism guide in the region for 27 years and speaks English, Spanish and German.

Guided hikes through lenga forest, photography outings along the turquoise rivers, artisan visits and scenic tours around Coyhaique are all arranged on request. The main lodge looks over the Upper Simpson Valley and the forested mountains around it, which makes quiet days at the lodge easy to fill. Coyhaique, the region’s main town, is about 30 minutes away, and a partner who does not fish can follow a non-fishing program on request.
