3.5 Miles of Private Water and Eight Named Pools
Restigouche River Lodge holds the rights to 3.5 miles of private water, with England, Scowshed, Upper Home, Lower Home, Mann’s, Poker, Ledges and Adams as the named pools. The pools are large with long runs, which suits spey casting, and wading is easy over fine gravel with few snags. About two more miles of adjacent water open to guests in spring and again from late summer to the end of September.
Canoes and No Driving to the River
On the deeper pools anglers fish from 26-foot motor-powered canoes, a Restigouche design that has been used on the river for over a hundred years. A stable canoe means anglers stand and cast, and guests never need to drive to their fishing.
Spring Hens, June Fish and Fall Runs
Mid-May to early June brings large salmon, mostly hens of thirty pounds and more, fished with big wet flies, tubes or Waddington shanks on sinking lines and a two-handed rod. Salmon numbers climb through June and early July as more males and, around the end of June, grilse arrive, and the lodge calls the last two weeks of June and the first week of July its most prized. From the end of August numbers keep rising toward late September, and sea-run brook trout turn up in spring and fall.
Guides, Releases and the 30 lb Club
Guides take two anglers each, out at 8:00 for the morning and again from 5:00 until dark, which leaves the middle of the day free. All salmon are released, grilse included, and fish over thirty pounds go into the lodge’s 30 lb Club. Most anglers bring their own gear, and the lodge can supply rods and reels if you ask ahead.
